Learn about the types of licences

Types of Licences

Here's a clearer breakdown of the eligibility requirements and next steps for obtaining different types of driving licences in Victoria:

  • To get a Victorian driving licence, you must be at least 18 years old.
  • Alternatively, you can apply for a Learner Permit at 16 years and begin the learning process.

Next Steps:

  • If you don't have a driving licence, you need to pass three tests:

Learner Permit Test: A knowledge test covering road rules and driver safety.
Hazard Perception Test: Assesses your ability to recognize and respond to hazards on the road.
Drive Test: Practical driving assessment to demonstrate your ability to operate a vehicle safely.

P1 (Red P) Probationary licence:

  • Requirements include holding a Learner Permit for at least one year.
  • Recording 120 hours of driving practice (including 20 hours at night) in a logbook or app.
  • Passing the Hazard Perception Test within one year before the Drive Test.
  • Passing the Drive Test in an automatic car restricts you to driving automatic vehicles. Passing in a manual car removes this restriction.

P2 (Green P) Probationary licence:

  • Requirements include holding a Learner Permit for at least six months.
  • The Hazard Perception test remains valid for one year.
  • Similar driving restrictions apply based on the type of car you use for the Drive Test.

P2 (Green P) Probationary licence:

  • Requirements include holding a Learner Permit for at least three months.
  • The Hazard Perception test remains valid for one year.
  • Driving restrictions depend on whether you pass the Drive Test in an automatic or manual car.

If you plan to drive in Victoria for more than six months, you'll need to convert your overseas licence to a Victorian driver’s licence.
To obtain a full driver’s licence in Victoria, you must meet the following criteria:

- Be at least 21 years old.

- Hold a valid international driver’s licence, or if proof of age is required, have held an international driver’s licence for at least three years starting from your 18th birthday.

- Ensure your foreign driver’s licence hasn't expired more than five years ago. The duration you've held your licence doesn't include periods when you were suspended or disqualified from driving.

Victorian Probationary Driver Licence

A Victorian probationary driver’s licence requires the holder to be at least eighteen years old, and there are no exclusions.
Depending on your age and the length of time you have had your overseas driver’s licence, an appropriate probationary term (P1 or P2) will apply, and you will have to provide supporting documents.
The duration for which you have held a licence is not extended to include any period during which you have been suspended, disqualified or cancelled.
